Life Insurance: AIA CI SuperCare -Critical illness

ประกันโรคร้ายแรง man having heart attack

  • AIA CI SuperCare (also called AIA Critical Illness Super Care) is life coverage together with a critical illness protection policy from AIA Thailand, a member of the AIA Group.
  • Pay the premium for only 10 or 20 years, and then the policy covers you until the age of 99.
  • AIA CI SuperCare covers early-stage CI and severe-stage CI for up to 62 critical illnesses, diseases / treatments.
  • Fixed premium. The premium does not increase annually.
  • The policy has a cash surrender value as well as a maturity benefit.

Who is AIA CI SuperCare for?

  • In Thailand, critical illness insurance is usually purchased separately from general health insurance. AIA customers can choose between critical illness insurance that is bought as a separate standalone / main policy (CI SuperCare) or as an add-on rider policy (Multi Pay CI, CI Top Up, and CI Plus).
  • AIA CI SuperCare is especially useful for people who may require additional funds if they are hospitalized. Health insurance covers medical expenses, however, people often need cash to supplement other expenses related to living with a disease.
  • People with dependents who don’t have a large savings can also benefit from CI SuperCare. If the policyholder dies (either naturally, in an accident, or from a CI), the policy payout can help cover expenses if returning to work is difficult or not possible.

CI SuperCare  Overview & Pricing

Policy Overview

CI SuperCare is a critical illness protection policy from AIA Thailand that covers up to 62 diseases and treatments (including early-stage and severe).

This policy can also be considered life insurance because 100% of the sum assured is paid in the event of death or if the policy matures (reaches the end of the policy period).

CI SuperCare is a standalone policy (not a rider), where the premium is paid for either 10 or 20 years but continues to provide coverage until 99 years old.

Many insurance companies have annual premium increases, however, the premium for AIA CI SuperCare is fixed meaning no annual increases.

Pricing Table

The pricing for CI SuperCare depends on the following:

  • Required sum assured (between 200,000 – 4,999,999 THB)
  • Age
  • Gender
  • Premium payment period (Choose either 10 or 20 years)

As you can imagine, the pricing table can be a bit complicated and long with all the variables. Therefore, I’ve simplified the pricing table to be able to give you a sample.

Why Buy Critical Illness Coverage?

Critical illnesses can be debilitating. Illness and recovery can also come with additional expenses that health insurance policies don’t cover.

Such as:

  • Purchasing medical devices, such as wheelchairs, or equipment needed for mobility at home.
  • Hiring of a nurse, or support staff.
  • Alternative transport, or car modification.
  • Extended medication.
  • Physiotherapy
  • Loss of income from work

In Thailand, critical illness coverage is more often than not not included in health insurance policies.

However, customers can buy CI insurance either separately as a standalone policy or as an add-on policy to their existing health insurance.

AIA CI SuperCare Coverage & Benefit

CI SuperCare covers both early-stage and severe diseases and treatments that are currently a major cause of death in Thailand.

Coverage refers to which illnesses and treatments are covered by the policy that results in the sum assured, or part of the sum assured, being paid.

CI SuperCare coverage is the same whether you choose the 10-year or 20-year payment period.

There are four different coverage situations where the policy pays out the benefit:

1 – Early stage critical illness

2 – Severe stage critical illness

3 – Death benefit

4 – Maturity benefit

1 – Early-stage Critical Illness

There are 18 diseases / treatments that are covered in the early to intermediate stage. You can see all the covered diseases in the brochure.

If you are diagnosed with one of these early stage diseases or conditions, the policy pays out 20% of the sum assured.

2 – Severe-Stage Critical Illness

There are 44 diseases / treatments that are covered in the severe stage.

You can only get a maximum of 100% sum assured benefit. This means that if you get a 20% Early Stage payout, you get the other 80% sum assured benefit with a severe critical illness.

3 – Death benefit

AIA CI SuperCare is also considered life insurance. If the policyholder dies within the policy period he or she will receive up to 100% of the sum assured.

4 – Maturity Benefit

If the SuperCare policy matures at 99 years, then the policyholder also receives 100% of the sum assured.

Again, you can only receive 100% of the sum assured benefit.

CI Diseases Covered Under AIA CI SuperCare

There are six groups of critical illnesses covered under AIA CI Supercare:

  • Group 1: Cancer and Tumor
  • Group 2: Heart, Respiratory and Blood Circulation system
  • Group 3: Cerebral vascular nervous and muscular
  • Group 4: Major organs and functions
  • Group 5: Infection accidental injury and disability
  • Group 6: Child diseases (cover from age 1 month to before age 17)

The list of diseases has been translated into English in the CI SuperCare brochure

CI SuperCare from AIA is a very straightforward policy, so its brochure isn’t as long as some of AIA’s other products.

What is the AIA CI SuperCare Payment Period?

The AIA CI SuperCare premiums can be paid monthly, quarterly, every 6 months, or annually.

Depending on the premium payment you are comfortable paying, you can choose whether you want to have a payment period of either 10 years or 20 years.

Most of my customers are happy with the 20 year payment period, but some prefer a shorter payment period and choose 10 years.

CI SuperCare Premium Payment Period 10 Years

Below you can see an illustration of a payment period of 10 years. After 10 years the policyholder stops paying but continues receiving coverage from the policy.

100% of SA refers to 100% of the Sum Assured.

If the policy matures or if death occurs the policy is terminated and 100% of the sum assured is paid less 20% (if you’ve already received 20% previously because of an early stage diagnosis).

CI SuperCare Premium Payment Period 20 Years

Below you can see an illustration of a payment period of 20 years. After 20 years the policyholder stops paying but continues to receive coverage from the policy.

Important Terms & Conditions of the CI SuperCare

The applicant has an obligation to declare facts when applying for the insurance. Concealment or false declaration may cause the Company to void and deny the payment of compensations under the policy.

• The applicant is advised to study details of product information in prospectus. After receiving the policy, the insured is advised to study the terms and conditions of coverage in the policy contract.

• Terms and conditions of coverage will be specified in the policy issued to the policyholder.

What is the Sum Assured?

The sum assured is the amount that is paid to the policyholder when certain criteria are met.

For example, the sum assured for the AIA CI SuperCare policy is the amount that can be claimed if the policyholder dies, or is diagnosed with a critical illness.

The amount you can claim will depend on whether the critical illness is in its early-stage or severe-stage.

How much Sum Assured should I get?

It’s completely up to you. With CI SuperCare you can choose a sum assured amount of 200,000 THB to 4,999,999 THB. If you need a larger sum assured please send me a message.

As a financial advisor, I give the following recommendations to my customers who are interested in the policy.

  1. A primary benefit of CI SuperCare is to provide the insured and his or her dependents with enough funds while the insured is recovering from a critical illness.
  2. If the critical illness is severe, the insurance should also be enough to support the insured, who may not be able to return to work.
  3. If death occurs, the amount should be able to cover his or her dependents expenses for an adequate period of time.

As an AIA agent, I understand that there are many variables when calculating a sufficient sum assured.

Feel free to discuss the sum assured amount with me, or have a look below at a formula below that may help you decide.

Try this formula when calculating the sum assured

Take your monthly expenses and multiply the value by the timeframe you would like to be covered for.

Expenses per month, x required months to be covered

When preparing for a bad medical situation, it is recommended to plan for a recovery period of 3 to 5 years (48 to 60 months).

While this may seem like a long recovery period, people often underestimate how long it takes to recover and make the mistake of not getting a high enough sum assured to cover this period.
